1) 2007 LAUREATE PRIZE WINNERS FOR WOMEN’S CREATIVITY IN RURAL LIFE: Twenty years ago, a few women decided to save Campo Benfeito, an isolated village in Portugal threatened with extinction because there was little economic activity. In 1985, these women attended a training course in sewing, aiming to build on skills they had learned from their mothers. They intended to produce and market traditional capuchas. 2) GLOBAL 50/50 NETWORK – GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT GLOBALLY!: In 2000, Women’s Environment and Development Organisation launched the 50/50 Campaign to increase women’s participation and representation in governments around the world In December 2007, along with the Network of NGOs of Trinidad and Tobago for the Advancement of Women, WEDO will invite experts from around the world to convene in Trinidad for a strategic meeting on women political candidates and their access to campaign resources. 3) WOMEN WIN – LAUNCH OF FIRST ORGANISATION FOR WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORT: Women Win, the first ever international organization to support women’s empowerment through sport activities was launched in Amsterdam in November. http://www.womenwin.org

4) WOMEN DELIVER CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER, LONDON: Almost 2,000 participants from 109 countries created the energy, the commitment, and the knowledge to fundamentally shift how women’s health and women’s contributions are viewed in the global agenda. Seventy cabinet ministers and parliamentarians pledged to make achievement of Millennium Development Goal 5 (Improve Maternal Health) “a high priority on the national, regional and international health agenda.” As a result, there are now hundreds of millions in new money to improve the lives of women. http://www.womendeliver.org/pdf/pressrelease_news.pdf

6) STRENGTH IN NUMBERS – WOMEN MPs FORGE CROSS-PARTY CAUCUS IN IRAQI PARLIAMENT: The creation of a cross-party women’s caucus composed of 73 women MPs, was announced on Sunday 23 September 2007 by the Speaker of the 275-seat Iraqi Parliament, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani. http://www.unifem.org/news_events/story_detail.php?StoryID=633

7) JORDANIAN WOMEN MAKE HISTORY IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS: An unprecedented number of women candidates and voters turned out for the Jordanian municipal elections this year. Results, announced on 2 August, revealed that of the 355 women candidates, 20 secured victory through the ballot-box, while a further 195 obtained seats pursuant to the recently-instated women’s quota. http://www.unifem.org/news_events/story_detail.php?StoryID=609

8) DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO – HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WOMEN RAPED FOR BEING ON THE WRONG SIDE: Sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is being used as an instrument of war in the current conflict. http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,2209383,00.html


B) PRIZES/AWARDS/FUNDING

1) THE AFRICAN WOMEN SERVICE FELLOWSHIP, NY, APPLICATION DEADLINE JANUARY 15: The fellowship expands the opportunity for African women to prepare for public service in their home countries. As fellows at NYU Wagner, African women study in one of two graduate programs: the two-year Master of Public Administration or the one-year Master of Science in Management of International Public Service Organizations. Applicants commit to return to their respective home countries at the conclusion of the program with the goal of assuming a leadership position on the continent where they can meaningfully contribute to the challenges currently confronting Africa. http://wagner.nyu.edu/international/awpsf.php

2) PRIZE FOR WOMEN’S CREATIVITY IN RURAL LIFE, NOMINATION DEADLINE 31 MARCH 2008: Organised by the Women’s World Summit Foundation-Women and Children First, the prize ($500- per laureate $3000 – for African women’s organisations) honours women and women’s groups around the world exhibiting exceptional creativity, courage and commitment for the improvement of the quality of life in rural communities (317 prizes awarded so far). 3) THE AFRICAN WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT FUND (AWDF): AWDF funds local, national, sub-regional and regional organisations in Africa working towards women’s empowerment. The AWDF is an institutional capacity-building and programme development fund, which aims to help build a culture of learning and partnerships within the African women’s movement. 4) HIVOS FUND – GLOBAL, ROLLING DEADLINE: Hivos provides financial and political support to local private organisations in more than thirty countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South-Eastern Europe. 6) GLOBAL FUND FOR WOMEN GRANT, ROLLING DEADLINE: The GFW aims to support women’s groups that advance the human rights of women and girls. GFW works to strengthen women’s groups based outside the United States by providing small, flexible, and timely grants ranging from $500 to $20,000 for operating and project expenses. 1) FEMINIST ECONOMICS: Feminist Economics provides an open forum for dialogue and debate about feminist economic perspectives. The journal solicits high quality contributions from a broad spectrum of intellectual traditions in economics. It welcomes the treatment of economic issues from cross-disciplinary and cross-country perspectives. 1) MIRROR ON THE MEDIA-GENDER AND ADVERTISING IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: This publication is a study conducted by Gender Links (GL) on gender and advertising in Southern Africa. It forms part of Mirror on the Media series of monitoring reports coordinated by GL with the support of the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa (OSISA) on gender and the media. 2) WOMEN’S UN REPORT NETWORK (WUNRN): The Women’s UN Report Program & Network (WUNRN) is a non-governmental organisation established to implement the conclusions and recommendations of a United Nations Study on Freedom of Religion of Belief and the Status of Women From the Viewpoint of Religion and Traditions (E/CN.4/2002/73/Add.2).
