IWDA congratulates Janet Hunt, recipient of the fourth Sir Ron Wilson Human Rights Award, which recognises an ‘outstanding contribution to advancing human rights in the international development sector’. The Award was announced at the Australian Council for International Development’s Annual Council meeting at the end of October.
Janet has been an exceptional advocate for human rights throughout her career, and has had a particular impact in the field of gender and development. As head of International Women’s Development Agency from 1992-1995, Janet helped make a significant difference to the lives of many women and their communities.
Janet also contributed to the field through her roles as Executive Director of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid (now ACFID, 1995-2000), Lecturer in International Development at ANU, Deakin and RMIT Universities, and as an academic researcher on human rights and development. She has also been a strong promoter of Indigenous rights and development including through active roles in the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific Movement and ANTaR, and in her role as a Fellow and Senior Research Manager with the Indigenous Community Governance Project at the Centre for Aboriginal Policy Research, Australian National University.
We would like to extend our very warm congratulations to Janet on receiving this prestigious award, and we join ACFID in recognising her important work.
