Women Go Government

Strengthening women’s participation in Municipal government

Partner: Commonwealth Local Government Forum Pacific Project
Country: Fiji

This project aims to advance the role of municipal local governments in achieving gender equality in Fiji by working to deepen women’s political representation and participation at this level.

Key strategies are to promote attitudinal change to gender issues by raising awareness at the community and local government levels; integrate a gender perspective into political party and local government policies, processes and service delivery activities; strengthen support networks for women candidates and councillors; and strengthen strategic partnerships more broadly for supporting women’s political representation and participation. The approach is strategic, multi-level and integrated with existing programs and activities, in particular UNIFEM’s regional program for ‘Advancing Gender Equality in Political Governance in the Pacific’.
Project Objectives

  • Increased opportunities for women’s participation in Local Government
  • Increased opportunities for women’s political representation in Local Government
  • Increased support by men (and women) for women’s representation and participation
  • An increased support for locally elected women to effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities
  • An increase in gender sensitive local government policies and procedures

This project is funded the UN Democracy Fund (UNDF).
