In the wake of cyclone Mick last night, Fiji’s women’s agencies are already on the ground to see what must be done.
fem’LINKPACIFIC reports:
A fem’LINK team is currently in Nadi for work and we are about to drive to Lautoka and Ba and will compile another Women’s Weather Watch report after checking in further with our rural networks.
Femlink closed its office yesterday in Suva and in Nadi a handful of women who had access to cars and from the Namaka area were able to meet us for a very brief but productive meeting …but the TC intensified here in the west from 11am onwards; however women in remote communities were already “waterlogged” from the rains from Sunday night.
Obviously this affects vegetable supply and agriculture based economic livelihoods and more trauma for those affected by the January floods.
In the case of assistance packs for women please do not forget sanitary supplies and under-garments for women and girls and also the special needs of nursing mothers.
Also as part of any recovery programme setting up “seed banks” with community groups eg the Ba Senior Citizens Centre would be helpful too.
Watch this space for more information as it comes in…
