Perempuan Papua: A Detailed Account of the Position of Women in West Papua

This article reviews Petrus Tekege’s well-rounded account of the lives of West Papuan women, which covers a range of issues including education, health, family life and marriage, domestic violence, economic activity, mother-and-child survival rates, the legal framework of the rights of men and women, and gender discrimination.

Tekege’s text pays special attention to health in West Papua, which has particularly interesting implications for women due to the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS unmatched in any other part of Indonesia. B.M.
