Grupo Uma Mahon's textile piece

The Salele Uma Mahon (Safe House), is a site for training young people from the nearby community in crafts such as embroidery, tais weaving and candle making, and in preparing traditional medicine.

Once housed in a rented bungalow, the ‘Uma Mahon’ now has training rooms and accommodation in 4 one-storey concrete buildings on a property donated by the local government. Funding for its construction came from a number of donors, including UNMIT, Manos Unidas, UNIFEM, UNDP and the Australian Justice Facility.

This shelter is now part of a nation-wide referral network for women and child victims of violence.
