| Other Info | International Women's Day 'Brown Bag' Lunch Seminar When: Tuesday 8th March 1:00pm - 2:30pm International Women's Day celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future and, in particular, the right to vote for women. International Women's Day honours the work of campaigners of women’s rights, celebrates women's success and reminds us of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. 2011 is the Global Centenary Year. Despite great achievements in the past 100 years, significant inequities persist. Women are more likely to be poor and have less access than men to education and paid employment. Women are disproportionately aected by mental health, behavioural and social conditions including depression, anxiety, sexual and domestic violence and substance use. Pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable time. Annually on this day, hundreds of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. Please join us for an update on these issues and discussion. Speakers: Dr Wendy Holmes Principal Technical Advisor, Burnet Institute Andrea Fischer Harm Reduction and Development Advisor, Burnet Institute Jo Crawford Research & Policy Advisor, IWDA N’Deane Helajzen Overseas Program Manager Papua New Guinea, IWDA Associate Professor Jane Fisher Key Centre for Women’s Health, Gender and Society Venue: Level 2 Boardroom, Burnet Institute, 85 Commercial Road, Melbourne RSVP: Please respond to sieyinp@burnet.edu.au by Friday 4 March 2011 |
