IWDA Supporter Holds a House Concert Fundraiser

Jane Bange is one of nine enthusiastic IWDA supporters who will be Taking Steps to Timor-Leste next month to raise vital funds for IWDA and our partners, focusing incredible amounts of energy into their fundraising.

Jane’s creative initiative is an example of this – read about the recent house concert Jane held in her home to raise funds and awareness of women’s struggles in Asia and the Pacific.

The String Chickens (Russell Dobie, Lindi Wall, Sue Dilley and Louise Bell) perform at the home of Jane Bange and Tony Blake.

Recently, over fifty people attended a lunch and house concert in Kingston to raise money for IWDA and Jane Bange’s fundraising trip to East Timor.

Star attractions were ‘The String Chickens’, Louise Bell, Sue Dilley, Lindy Wall and Russell Dobie who wowed the audience with their combination of lovely harmonies, glorious outfits and great musical talent. Their name is a play on words. Three of the members are women of ‘a certain age’ who all play stringed instruments, including mandolin and ukelele and, not so long ago, they were joined by Russell, on double bass.

‘The String Chickens’ specialise in original songs from the twenties, thirties and forties, and complement these with outfits from the same era.  Many of the songs were written during the Great Depression so are heartfelt and uplifting, aiming to lift spirits through difficult times.

Jane Bange talks about her upcoming Challenge in Timor-Leste. She has previously done a Challenge in Cambodia, cycling 500 kms for IWDA.

Organiser, Jane Bange, is thrilled with the result.  “I was hoping to make $1000 but this has far exceeded my expectations and I am grateful to everyone who contributed. A very special thanks goes to ‘The String Chickens’ who generously donated their performance to raise money for IWDA and my fundraising trip to East Timor”, Jane said.

My goal was to raise $5,000 for IWDA and I’ve now achieved this. It’s such a wonderful result but, as I’ve still got two months before I leave for East Timor, I’m now going to continue and see just how much more I can raise to help poor women and their families in the Asia-Pacific region.”

More fundraisers are lined up, with a cocktail party in Marion Bay, a brunch in Deep Bay and an African dinner in West Hobart.

But I’d really like to do more fundraisers in my home area so if anyone wants to host a morning or afternoon tea, or a weekend brunch, I’d be very happy to come along and say a few words about IWDA and my trip to East Timor in May.  It doesn’t matter how big or small, it all helps to assist IWDA and inform people about the work it is doing with communities in need.”

You can contact Jane on 6227 1907, email her at ablake@intas.net.au or donate online via Jane’s ‘Go Fundraise’ page.

We thank Jane for her wonderful efforts and wish her luck on her trek to the summit of Mt. Ramelau, the highest peak in Timor-Leste!
