Women with disabilities often face double discrimination on the grounds of both their gender and impairment(s), and challenges and barriers such as poverty and gender based violence can be magnified for women with disabilities. Violence against women can also be a significant cause of preventable disability in the first place.
In collaboration with partners including Banteay Srei in Cambodia, IWDA has also helped to develop a two-year participatory research project called Triple Jeopardy. This project investigates the multiple disadvantages experienced by Cambodian women with disabilities. The project has so far supported field researchers to receive specialist training to interview women on sensitive issues including violence against women. The field researchers have completed 221 surveys and 15 in-depth interviews with women who have experienced violence plus a number of focus groups and key informant interviews.
IWDA Overseas Program Manager for Cambodia Kathy Oliver has recently visited Cambodia and spoken with one of the field researchers about her experiences interviewing women for this project. This interview will be posted on the website in the next few days and will offer a firsthand perspective of the work that the Triple Jeopardy project is undertaking. Follow IWDA on Twitter or Facebook to be alerted when the interview becomes available.
