Q. What sort of people take part in the Challenges?

People on the Challenge will come from a variety of backgrounds and ages from 18 through to 68. It’s the people involved that really make these trips special. You’ll be surprised at how many new friendships you will make and the great team spirit and camaraderie formed during the event – especially after working so hard to get there!

Q. What will I need to take with me? Do I need any special equipment?

Intrepid provide a recommended packing list under ‘what to take’ in the trip notes on the website. Apart from a cycle helmet there is no need to go out and purchase expensive gear.

Q. What is the food like? Are special dietary requirements catered for?

With all the exercise, you will have very healthy appetites and we always try to serve fantastic local dishes to give you a varied culinary adventure. In many places there will be a mixture of Western and local dishes so you should be able to find something familiar to eat. We will make an effort to cater to any special dietary needs, allergies and vegetarian diets. Please make sure you notify us of your requirements on the registration form. You will never go hungry!

Q. How many people take part?

We aim to take between 15 and 35 participants on the trip. This is the best group size to provide a supportive and lively atmosphere and yet the group is still small enough to get to know everyone.

Q. Who leads the Challenges?

You will be well supported by a very experienced team of an Intrepid leader and local guides. They will encourage and motivate you as well as provide a unique insight into the host country from language and etiquette through to religion, beliefs and how their history has brought them to where they are today.

An IWDA staff member will also be travelling in Cambodia with you.

Q. How safe are the activities?

The safety of the group is our first priority and a thorough risk assessment is made on the itinerary. You will be given a full safety briefing during the event and cautioned about any activity which could pose a hazard to your own or the group’s welfare. It is recommended that you take the time to review the government travel advice regarding the country you’re visiting at www.dfat.gov.au. All Intrepid’s leaders are first aid trained.

Q. What about health requirements?

We recommend that you visit your local Travel Clinic or doctor before departure who can advise you on what vaccinations are recommended. As some vaccinations require a course over weeks to months, contact your doctor as early as possible prior to departure. Generally, six to eight weeks’ notice is adequate. For more information search on www.travelvax.com.au

Q. Will I have to carry my luggage?

Your main luggage will be transported in support vehicles or by porters unless otherwise stated. A day pack or cycle bag is necessary to carry camera, sunscreen, snacks & small items with you. Please pack as light as possible as you will still have to carry your own gear to and from the hotel and load it onto the bus each day. Suitcases are not recommended.

Q. What is the accommodation like?

We use different types of accommodation, depending upon availability in each town. The standard will vary according to where we are and we ask for your patience, as at times things do not work the way you are used to at home. Sometimes there may be no electricity, the plumbing may be temperamental, there is only cold water in the showers or there will be no Western breakfast food.

Q. Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on the Challenge for Change.
When selecting a travel insurance policy we require that your policy covers you for the following:

  • Emergency repatriation and full Medical Cover
  • 24 hr Emergency Assistance
  • Personal Liability coverage
  • Coverage for cancellation, curtailment, loss of luggage and personal effects.

You must send IWDA a copy 8 weeks prior to departure.

Q. What about passports and visas?

You must hold a full passport, which is valid for at least six months from the return date. If you need to obtain or renew your passport please allow at least six weeks to process. Details of any visas required can be found in the trip notes.
You must send IWDA a photocopy of your passport at least 14 weeks prior to departure.

Q. Can I extend my trip?

There are limited options offered by Intrepid to extend your trip at the end of the event. Please read the terms and conditions on the website and download the relevant extension form. This must be submitted to Intrepid 90 days prior to travel.

Q. How many hours a day will we be cycling for?

That all depends on the particular day and your speed but generally between 4 - 7 hours. A support bus is available should you require some rest. There are some rest days included in the itinerary (including one on the beach!).
