Meet the IWDA Team Leader - Kathy Proctor

Occupation: Special Events Coordinator, IWDA

Why am I doing this?
IWDA’s Charity Challenge is an amazing way for supporters to become involved with the organisation. Not only do they get to travel to a beautiful country but they work hard to get there - fundraising is not always easy! The money the challengers raise will support projects that would not otherwise have been possible and to me this makes the entire process incredibly special.

What am I most excited about?
I am so excited about seeing everyone on that first morning on their bikes in Cambodia. (I am especially excited because I know that everyone will have their helmets and drink bottles as no one will have forgotten them!)

I am really looking forward to meeting the women that IWDA partners with in Cambodia. I am already in awe of what these women accomplish so to meet them and hear their stories will be amazing.

I love meandering slowly through villages on my bike and I’m really looking forward to stopping for a chat with locals who are out and about.

Shamefully I am also really looking forward to shopping in the fabulous markets!

What am I most nervous about?
Okay, so I’m not the fittest person in the world so I really need to do some training. I will also definitely be bringing a gel seat cover and padded bike pants - minimise discomfort wherever possibly.

Meet the team

Rider Cara Gleeson Michelle D’Arcy Emma Kate Rose
  gleeson mdarcy ekrose
Occupation Student Group Credit Manager – Seven Network (Docklands - Melbourne) Mother of two small boys, and Co-Founder of G-Whiz Carshare, Brisbane.
Why I am doing this? For change and a challenge. The only barriers to me achieving my goals are the ones I put up myself…..just think how great it would be if the women and communities we are assisting can also make this concept their reality. To empower women and girls
What am I most excited about? Meeting everyone involved in the projects and the Challenge for Change and being part of something big and exciting. Reaching all the goals I set for myself preparing for the Challenge – to eventually participate is a bonus. Meeting inspiring individuals who are making huge changes – not just for women’s empowerment, but also for the Earth – it’s one of the best ways to respond to Climate Change, because educated and empowered women have greater control over their local populations.
What am I most nervous about? Early morning starts on the bikes, and not wanting to come home afterwards. Staying on the bike!! Nervous? What is there to be nervous about?
Rider Dean Anderson Ben Carroll Amelia Lowery
  Dean Anderson   Amelia Lowrey
Occupation Sales Police Officer Fashion Design
Why I am doing this? For change and a challenge. To give something back to people less fortunate than ourselves. Because I would like to do something good, and I want to support IWDA and the work they do.
What am I most excited about? The Challenge and being in a different country. Exercising and losing the love handles. Riding through Cambodia with a group of people I would never normally be that close to.
What am I most nervous about? The Challenge and being in a different country. Dean Anderson. Raising the money, but that’s seeming easier and easier now. Actually I don’t think I am really nervous about anything anymore.
Rider Sue Wagner Meg Nolan Danielle Le Brocq
Sue Wagner Meg Nolan Dani LeBrocq
Occupation Business consultant Medical Scientist Cytogeneticist Social worker
Why I am doing this? Once I read about the Challenge in IWDA News I just had to try for it. The personal challenge is exciting, but it’s also a great opportunity to meet people in Cambodia and see “on the ground”; women’s projects in Asia. For the challenge of fundraising and actually helping a worthy cause and the challenge of riding a bike for 2 weeks. To experience something different and to try and promote change
What am I most excited about? Meeting new people; challenging myself. The sights and cultural experience of Cambodia. Experiencing the different culture, challenging myself . . . and extending my trip to Vietnam with Bec!
What am I most nervous about? The innoculations I have to have before I go! My fitness level and how sore my butt is going to be at the end of every day. The bike seat . . .
Rider Joy Humphreys Belinda Bianco Bec Ampt
  Joy Humphreys   bec-bigger.jpg
Occupation Consultant for thehumphreysgroup Coles Supply Co-Ordinator - Cadbury Schweppes Diving Coach
Why I am doing this? I am really looking forward to direct involvement with the women who will benefit from this fundraising. To help in creating a better way of life for people who are less fortunate than me. Could not pass up the opportunity to venture overseas, alongside awsome people, especially for such an exciting project.
What am I most excited about? Meeting the people, experiencing the culture and cycling more than 400km (this is really going to test me physically!) Competing in such a wonderful challenge and being able to see Cambodia in a way I would not normally do. Meeting the locals, the food and the culture.
What am I most nervous about? Falling off and getting injured! Early mornings and having an extremely sore bottom At first: squeezing the money out of peoples pockets. Now my fundraising ball is in motion it doesnt seem so daunting. Now Im just pumped.
Rider Mary Davidson Evelyn Taylor Bec Harnett
  Mary Davidson   Bec Hartnett
Occupation Owner of Paper Impressions, a fund raiser for a Tanzanian sustainable development project called JITUME Clinical Nurse Educator Student
Why I am doing this? I wish to do another cycling trip. Having had 6 months of treatment last year when I could not exercise, it is making me train to be fit again. Interest in IWDA work. I really wanted to get involved with a charity where even the smallest of assistance makes a difference, and visit with these courageous women. I enjoy random challenges of the physical persuasion with minimal training.
What am I most excited about? A new culture for me I’m excited about the whole adventure, and doing something that my family and friends didn’t think I would do. Funtimes, food and friendship!!!
What am I most nervous about? Nothing at the moment. Wait until the time is closer! I guess I would be fooling myself if I didn’t say that the long days on a bike seat didn’t make me nervous. Fundraising - it’s a tough gig.
Rider Greg Oliver Michelle Duncan Peter Dobbin
Greg Oliver Michelle Duncan Peter Dobbin
Occupation Plumber Company director, Linen House Pty Ltd Environmental risk research
Why I am doing this? I love travel, I love bike riding and it is great to be able to do these and make a difference to other people lives. I want a more direct involvement in a charity benefiting women, (instead of just giving money to a cause) while at the same time seeing a country at a grass roots level - instead of my normal travel (international hotels, business people) To gauge a better understanding of social problems in developing countries
What am I most excited about? Going back to Cambodia - it really is a beautiful country. I’m also really excited to be getting back into bike riding. Meeting people - including participants of the cycling group, IWDA, and women of Cambodia. And seeing the country! Interaction in the communities
What am I most nervous about? Raising the funds - we are in a group of four so raising $20,000 will be quite a challenge. Getting in an accident, or getting ‘a bug’. Food poisoning
Rider Jessica Lees Terry Clift Su Clift
  Jessica Lees Terry Su Clift
Occupation Myotherapist Almost retired engineer: building a house and doing survey work for the Australian Bureau of Statistics Counselling Psychologist
Why I am doing this? Great way to give something back whilst exploring one of our neighbouring

What am I most excited about? Meeting the locals and experiencing their culture Being in Cambodia again but this time sharing it with Su and Luke Meeting up with our son Luke after his departure from Melbourne in April.
What am I most nervous about? Raising $10,000 in time!! Incompetent drivers Challenging “hills” especially on the 100km day!!
Rider Luke Clift Caroline McInerney Jane Bange
Luke Clift Caroline McInerney Jane Bange
Occupation Engineering Student/World Traveler Project Support Office, Department of Human Services Dentist
Why I am doing this? I believe it will be a great cultural experience as well as the fact that my parents were going on it. The experience I jumped at the chance to learn more about IWDA’s work, see a part of Asia I haven’t seen before and top be a part of a like-minded group.
What am I most excited about? I’m just really excited about everything South East Asia at the moment. I can’t wait! Seeing Cambodia Seeing the Cambodian countryside from a two-wheel perspective (but experiencing Cambodian cuisine comes a close second!)
What am I most nervous about? I’m not really worried about much. I am coming across the border from Thailand and meeting you there so I guess my main concern is getting visas and into the country. Raising the money I adore travelling so even the thought of 400 kms cycling isn’t enough to provoke any nerves.
Rider Robyn Whelan Elizabeth McKeand
  Robyn Whelan
Occupation Former secretary; uni student; teacher of English, Teacher Librarianship and Computing Studies; Local government Councillor, Deputy Lord Mayor; wife and mother Personal assistant to a Managing Director of an Agribusiness.
Why I am doing this? I am willing to accept a challenge which will bring about change for other persons as well as for myself. To see a country at the ground level, I think it’s a great way of seeing what’s happening in the country. To see some of the work of IWDA and to have fun with a group of people with similar interests.
What am I most excited about? The sense of self achievement if I am able to endure the grind, and if my stamina doesn’t stack up, the knowledge that I tried. Experiencing a different country with a group of people
What am I most nervous about? I’m not really, just willing to have a go. It will be a fun challenge. The 400 km bike ride!
