Solomon Islands Provincial Games Project

Project Summary:

The Solomon Islands Provincial Games project is a new initiative in sport-for-development aimed at promoting social cohesion and offering Solomon Island women and men in each of the country’s 10 Provinces the chance to stage their own multi-sport Provincial Games. Delivered under the auspice of the Solomon Islands National Sports Council, the project has a specific focus on reaching out to geographically isolated communities within each Province and ensuring that women are fully included in all aspects of planning, implementing and reviewing the Games. The project offers a high impact celebration of Solomon Islands achievement and culture and aims to enhancing the skills of women and men at Provincial level in a range of areas, such as planning, decision-making, budgeting and project management.

IWDA’s involvement in the project is focused on the following three major objectives:

  1. Promoting maximum participation of women as organisers, players, officials, coaches and spectators
  2. Ensuring that women’s needs are a priority consideration and catered for at all stages in the project
  3. Assisting women at community level to overcome barriers to participation in the Games
