Community Action Against Violence Against Women (CAAVAW)

Country: Cambodia
Partners: Banteay Srei, Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC)
Funder: This is funded through the AusAid Australia-Cambodia Cooperation Agreement.

The project was designed by representatives from 3 Cambodian NGOs (Banteay Srei, ADHOC, Gender and Development in Cambodia (GAD/C) and IWDA, in 2006. Over 160 women and men were interviewed in Battambang and Siem Reap provinces through the design process. Meetings were also held with representatives from the government, donors, UN agencies, international NGOs and Cambodian NGOs.

This project addresses different forms of violence as they occur in the target areas. These include domestic violence (physical, psychological and economic), rape and sexual assault (including gang rape). The project is being implemented in 40 Villages in two provinces, Battambang and Siem Reap. 29 of these villages already had a village support network mechanism established by Banteay Srei. An additional 11 new villages were selected and now receive the full package of support from Banteay Srei and ADHOC.

Project Objectives

  • To expand & support Village Networks & Volunteers and build women’s confidence, leadership skills, and solidarity among women.
  • To promote awareness, and find ways to improve, the current practice of informal mediation in Violence Against Women cases, in terms of its impact/[treatment] of women who are suffering from violence and men who are violent.
  • To improve the quality of support services to women who suffer from serious domestic abuse & rape - including referrals for emergency shelter & medical assistance, emotional & legal counselling, legal representation & support throughout the court process.
  • To develop approaches that transform the attitudes & behaviours of men, through research, promoting dialogue among men, and piloting interventions at the village level.
