Empowering women in sustainable natural resource management
Every day millions of women and young girls collect water for their families - a ritual that reinforces gender inequalities in employment and education. - United Nations Human Development report 2006
This is just one example of the burden women bear in developing countries. For IWDA and our partners, promoting women’s right to sustainable use, and protection, of the environment and natural resources is essential.
In our winter edition of our newsletter you will read stories that show that not only are women central to sustainable natural resource management but they are also powerful agents of change.
Women acting together to transform the lives of other women - this is at the core of IWDA’s work. Have a look at the article by Gabrielle, IWDA Overseas Program Manager, which provides insight into a new project supported by IWDA where the objective is to integrate gender in community natural resources management.
See how Ursula, Caterets Islander (Papua New Guinea), with IWDA support, is assisting her community to adjust, preserve their culture and establish new livelihoods in response to climate change. Learn more about IWDA participation in a two-year research project that aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice on gender in water and sanitation projects in the Pacific.
The projects we write about in our newsletters change lives, and we enjoy being able to share something of this with you. To read the Winter 2009 newsletter please download the pdf
