4) INDONESIA: USING RELIGION TO STRENGTHEN GENDER EQUALITY, by Fabio Scarpello, Denpasar, Indonesia, 12th May: Staff at Indonesia’s National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan), a branch of the country’s Human Rights Commission, decided in 2007 that they needed to focus on religious leaders if they wanted to protect women. A result was the launch of three books written in Bahasa Indonesia by female scholars and religious leaders representing Islam, Catholicism and Protestantism, titled ‘Breaking the Silence: Religions Listen to the Voice of Female Victims of Violence in the Name of Justice’. They aim to break the monopoly held by men over interpretations of holy books and to challenge the hegemonic patriarchal culture upon which domestic violence is based.

3) CALL FOR PAPERS: GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT - WATER: Water is, literally, the source of life. Growing inequality and competition over dwindling supplies as a result of climate change and other forces risk turning water into ‘the new oil’. 2010 is the midway point of the International Water for Life Decade (2005-2015). The world currently faces a range of crises with environmental, economic, political and health-related dimensions, making water a key issue for all development researchers and workers. A gender perspective is essential. Contributions are invited from development researchers and workers who have experience to share with their peers, and with policymakers and decision-makers in development agencies and governments. Please send a paragraph outlining your proposed idea to gadeditor@oxfam.org.uk, as soon as possible, and before the commissioning deadline on 15th June, 2009.
