Equal Pay Day, marked for the first time last year, endeavours to enliven the pay equity debate and promotes the preservation of fair and equitable workplaces.
Women are two and half times more likely to live in poverty in their old age than men - by 2019, on average, women will have half the amount of superannuation that men have. Source: QLD Gov’t.
Equal Pay Day is a symbolic date, last year falling on 27th August - being the date that illustrates the number of extra days many women have to work after the end of the financial year to earn the same as men. Unfortunately, because the Gender Pay Gap (GPG) has increased by one percentage point to 17.2%, using the same measure, Equal Pay Day 2009 will take place on 1st September - 4 days later than last year.
Gender inequality remains an issue everywhere - including in Australia. So join IWDA in doing what you can to focus on the issue in your communities and workplaces on 1st September!
