In 1956, twenty thousand women marched to parliament to protest discriminatory pass laws. The march, commemorated as Women’s Day in South Africa on 9th August each year, has become iconic of women’s quest for equality. A democratic constitution has replaced apartheid laws, but the reality on the ground suggests freedom and equality for all has not yet been attained. See IPS for the full article.
