fem’LINKPACIFIC has just released the first Women, Peace and Human Security Report for 2010, created to ensure women’s effective participation in defining peace and human security priorities in Fiji.
The report outlines the priorities of women living in Fiji between January and April 2010, identified by fem’LINKPACIFIC, in their work undertaking 105 Household and Income Expenditure Survey reports (HIES); rural consultations with 71 which are an opportunity for a core group of women to frame their every day realities into a Human Security framework; and 36 interviews that were carried out by the Generation Next girls through vox pops and market Reports.
The report identifies women’s top priorities during this time – economic security, environmental security, and health security – all of which interconnected and dependent on personal safety and security.
In this report, you will find women’s stories about women’s priorities. They speak of the struggle to put food on the table, the inability to afford all the costs of sending children to school, the importance of land security for homes and farming, and the inability to access medicine and health services. Many of these priorities, of course, are inter-connected. Economic security is connected to not only food and health security, but also personal security and safety.
A consistent theme is also the inability to access social welfare assistance programmes, and even though the state has introduced a monthly Food Voucher system for recipient families, as our Women’s Household Income and Expenditure Survey reveals, this is insufficient to support the needs of a small household, let alone an extended family.
The full report can be downloaded on theĀ femLINKPACIFIC’s website.
