‘I was up in Goroka in Papua New Guinea last month (June), working with the wonderful Naomi Yupae and others to look at where Eastern Highlands Family Voice wants to head in the next few years. The organisation is doing great work to address violence, justice issues and resolve conflict – you can read more about it in their latest newsletter’. Deb Chapman, Gender Adviser, Melanesia

International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) welcomes changes to AusAID’s Family Planning Guidelines. IWDA Executive Director, Jane Sloane, said today that these changes would save lives and ensure that women were supported with information and services to reduce the incidence of maternal deaths.
Women and women’s organisations around the world were last night celebrating the fact that Australia has followed the example set by President Obama in the US in overturning USAID family planning guidelines that have impacted so tragically on women’s lives.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is an opportunity for us to reflect on women’s rights, the state of gender equity in our society and abroad, how far we have come, and what we will continue to fight for in the future.
Since the first globally celebrated IWD in the early 1900’s, gender equity has considerably improved – but there is still a long way to go.
Both in our own country and across the world, women must work together, alongside men, to promote equal rights and opportunities for all. IWD gives us all an opportunity to reflect on this future work.

Can’t attend the IWDA 2009 Feast? Then join us for a feast@home or feast@work to support women in developing countries and celebrate International Women’s Day.
Hosting your own Feast is easy! Simply invite your friends or co-workers to share a meal at home or work. To raise money for IWDA, attending guests donate the money they would usually spend on ‘eating out’ to IWDA. Easy, fun and worthwhile!

International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) is creating a new, exciting leadership initiative called Global Youth Impact (GYI). GYI will introduce girls to a range of high level leadership skills.
The program will encourage participants to think critically about gender inequalities and social justice issues that are really important to them, and will get them thinking about the different types of career options which are available in development, human rights and social justice based organisations. And they won’t be just talking– participants actually get to take some action and influence those around them!
