Newsletter 75: Promoting Women’s Voices

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Women hold only 16 % of seats in parliament worldwide. Currently there is not a single female parliamentarian in the Solomon Islands.
Promoting women’s voices is one of the aims of IWDA. With our partners, we are committed to ensuring women’s participation in their communities.
This newsletter focuses on our projects that give women the skills and self-confidence to advocate for women’s rights.

Reversal of the ‘Global Gag Rule’ on Family Planning

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

IWDA welcomes U.S. President Barack Obama’s overturning of the ban on federal funds to foreign family planning organisations, which offer abortion, or provide information and counselling regarding abortion.

The overturning of this rule will allow international aid funding to reach HIV/Aids clinics, organisations which offer counselling and support regarding abortion, and birth control providers.

The denial of funding to such organisations has, in the past, endangered the lives of countless women worldwide, creating a barrier around life saving sexual and reproductive health information, and family planning practices.

IWDA strongly encourages Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to follow President Obama’s lead and also overturn this ban on Australian funding for international organisations.
