Claire Rowland on making space for women, gender and Pacific perspectives in the PACER Plus negotiations

The absence of women from decision making in various arenas is a recurring theme on this website. Another ‘where are the women’ example that is concerning IWDA at the moment is the negotiation of new trade arrangements in the Pacific, known as PACER Plus

Joining IWDA’s Executive Director at the recent conference on Pacific women, held in Vanuatu was Claire Rowland, one of IWDA’s intrepid Pacific Program Managers. Here she offers her perspective…

How Women Can Change the World (and How Men Can Help)

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

On Wednesday March 10, 2010, One Just World brought together over 500 people to explore How Women Can Change the World. International Women’s Day comes at an important time this year as, with only five years to go until 2015, there is still an enormous amount to do to reach the Millennium Development Goal of gender equality and empowering women.

Hilary Charlesworth AM (internationally renowned commentator on international law and human rights) and Dr Helen Szoke (Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission) joined Jane Sloane (Executive Director of IWDA) at this forum, with the fabulous entertainment by Kavisha Mazella, Kankelay and the Women’s Circus.

Chris Grumm Speech (MP3)

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

As Jane Sloane mentioned in her February update, IWDA Empower and major donors were given the opportunity to hear Christine Grumm speak in Melbourne and Sydney as part of the Australian Women Donors’ Network’s Women Mobilising Millions campaign.

Christine Grumm is President and CEO of the international Women’s Funding Network, with more than three decades of experience as a leader in effecting social change through civil society, and especially through women’s philanthropy. Chris passionately believes in the power of women and girls’ solutions and is dedicated to helping unleash that potential to help transform the world.
For those of you who were unable to attend here is an MP3 of Chris speaking to IWDA supporters in Melbourne

Newsletter from Cambodia

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Greetings! I would like to introduce myself, Ann Wigglesworth, and I’m delighted to have now returned to IWDA as Programs Team Leader, my second time working for the organisation.

In 1996 I travelled to Cambodia to work with the IWDA Cambodia office (now Banteay Srei). At that time we were planning the implementation of an AusAID funded project ‘Food for Change’, a project including ‘Cow Banks’ and agriculture training that was set up to respond to the dire situation of the large numbers of traumatised widows in the aftermath of Khmer Rouge atrocities and ‘killing fields’. According to Thavy, one of our first Cambodian co-coordinators, at the time ‘people were only thinking of how to fill their stomachs’. But the cows became much more than an economic asset, contributing to the healing process for widows by becoming a part of their family. They symbolised hope and renewal.

In the field of international development, it is all too rare to have the chance to revisit communities to observe project impact over the long term. It has thus been an exciting opportunity to return last month to Cambodia and the IWDA supported Banteay Srei projects after 15 years.

The Music of Change

Happy New Year to you, as we raise the curtain on our 25th Year of operation!

We have a range of events planned for significant dates during this celebratory year, and hope these will provide a chance to meet many of you and to help us focus a spotlight on the value of investment in the empowerment of women.

Anne Frankenberg IWDA’s Strategic Partnerships Manager is writing the monthly update as Jane enjoys some well earned leave.
