How Women Can Change the World (and How Men Can Help)

How Women Can Change the World

On Wednesday March 10, 2010, One Just World brought together over 500 people to explore How Women Can Change the World. International Women’s Day comes at an important time this year as, with only five years to go until 2015, there is still an enormous amount to do to reach the Millennium Development Goal of gender equality and empowering women.

Hilary Charlesworth AM (internationally renowned commentator on international law and human rights) and Dr Helen Szoke (Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission) joined Jane Sloane (Executive Director of IWDA) at this forum, with the fabulous entertainment by Kavisha Mazella, Kankelay and the Women’s Circus.

Two or three things I know for sure

Two or three things I know for sure

The snowy streets of New York feel faraway from the summer warmth of Australia and yet the buzz and energy of so many women, and smaller numbers of men, descending on New York from all quarters of the globe creates its own fire.

The occasion is the 54th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the annual two week long event where government and non government representatives from around the world gather to discuss progress on gender equality and on initiatives that advance this cause.

IWDA invites you to the opening night fundraiser screening of The Last Station

IWDA invites you to the opening night fundraiser screening of The Last Station

Date: Thursday 8th April, 2010
(N.B. Because you are all busy as bees this Easter, this was re-scheduled from Thursday 1st April)
Time: 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start at the Cinema Nova, Carlton
The Last Station is a layered, rich and emotional story about the tumultuous 50 year relationship between pre-eminent Russian novelist, Leo Tolstoy, and his devoted wife, Countess Sofya.

It speaks of the hardships of living with love and the impossibility of living without it.

“This is the year’s best female performance”.
New York Post

With an Academy Awards Nomination for the Best Actress in a Leading Role, on top of a Best Actress Golden Globe Nomination, Helen Mirren’s performance, along with her fellow actors, is not to be missed.

Sound interesting?

Walking Amongst Sharp Knives: The Unsung Courage of Karen Women Village Chiefs in Conflict Areas of Eastern Burma

“Our amazing partners at KWO have released a groundbreaking new report this month called ‘Walking Amongst Sharp Knives: The unsung courage of Karen women village chiefs in conflict areas of Eastern Burma’. The report highlights previously unreported abuses taking place against ethnic Karen women in Burma and is a shocking expose of how women village heads are being targeted for systematic abuse by the military junta”.
