Newsletter 78: Women’s economic empowerment

In this newsletter, you’ll read stories of women from Fiji, Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands who are working to change and to improve the situation within their communities. We outline how we are helping our partners to support women in starting business, building their skills and developing a better livelihood security, especially in rural and vulnerable areas.

The articles highlight women’s ability to be activists for social change and the positive effect this can have on their families and communities. We enjoy being able to share something of this with you.

Newsletter 77: Addressing violence against women

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Addressing Violence Against Women

Violence against women is a prevalent and serious issue which is exacerbated by a number of factors, such as pervasive poverty, the low status of women, the impact of ethnic tensions and women’s absence from the political arena. Actual violence, and the fear of violence, negatively impacts on women’s ability to safely participate in the social, political and economic life of their communities.

IWDA and our partners support women experiencing violence and are working towards raising awareness of the issue within their communities.

In our Spring edition of the IWDA newsletter, take a look at:

- how women experiencing domestic violence in Sri Lanka are being supported by Kantha Shakthi

- a program run by IWDA’s Cambodian partner organisation, Banteay Srei, who are raising awareness of women’s rights and actively involving men in addressing the issue of violence against women

Newsletter 76: Empowering women in sustainable natural resource management

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Every day millions of women and young girls collect water for their families – a ritual that reinforces gender inequalities in employment and education. – United Nations Human Development report 2006

This is just one example of the burden women bear in developing countries. For IWDA and our partners, promoting women’s right to sustainable use, and protection, of the environment and natural resources is essential.

In our winter edition of our newsletter you will read stories that show that not only are women central to sustainable natural resource management but they are also powerful agents of change.

Newsletter 75: Promoting Women’s Voices

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Women hold only 16 % of seats in parliament worldwide. Currently there is not a single female parliamentarian in the Solomon Islands.
Promoting women’s voices is one of the aims of IWDA. With our partners, we are committed to ensuring women’s participation in their communities.
This newsletter focuses on our projects that give women the skills and self-confidence to advocate for women’s rights.

Can you think of a time in your life where you undertook a major, positive change? You may have been fortunate enough to have had the assistance of others; your friends, your family and your community, making the change easier. It is the same for the women IWDA works with in Asia and the Pacific and the generous support of our donors helps empower these women to make positive change.

Literacy unlocks the door to learning throughout life, is essential to development and health, and opens the way for democratic participation and active citizenship.”
Kofi Annan
Many of us take literacy for granted. We consider it to be a right not a privilege, but many women are denied this basic right.

Women who have no access to literacy are greatly disadvantaged, missing out on many opportunities that might otherwise be available to them.
