Hold a Silent-a-thon

Hold a silent-a-thon at Your School

KWO StudentsOn the Thai-Burma border there is a school like no other. There are no sports carnivals or Year 12 formals. The Karen Young Women’s Leadership School (KYWLS) teaches human rights and leadership skills, not maths and science, and the students are young women from the ethnic Karen minority, who have fled internal strife and human rights abuses in Burma, and now live in refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border.

IWDA work in partnership with the Karen Women’s Organisation who run the KYWLS, and together we aim to increase the confidence and capacity of young women from Karen refugee communities to participate in community life, focusing on developing practical leadership skills that will benefit students and their community.

This project is an example of how you can give women a voice by participating in silent-a-thon.

GET INVOLVED BY HOLDING A silent-a-thon

silent-a-thon is a fundraising program run by IWDA in secondary schools that support women such as the young refugee women on the Thai – Burma border.silent-a-thon involves you and your schoolmates getting sponsorship to remain silent for a whole day, afternoon or even a lunch break. A few hours of silence are a small sacrifice to make – in return you will get an idea of what living without freedom of speech would be like; as some women endure their whole lives, simply for being female.Funds raised though the silent-a-thon will go towards supporting IWDA projects, such as the Karen Young Women’s Leadership School, which support women and their communities in the Asia-Pacific region. silentathon bubble
