On the Thai-Burma border there is a school like no other. There are no sports carnivals or Year 12 formals. The Karen Young Women’s Leadership School (KYWLS) teaches human rights and leadership skills, not maths and science, and the students are young women from the ethnic Karen minority, who have fled internal strife and human rights abuses in Burma, and now live in refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border.
The Shan are also an ethnic minority who have fled Burma. Shan Women’s Action Network (SWAN) runs an internship program on the Thai-Burma border, which works to educate young Shan women in the same way as the KYWLS.
GET INVOLVED BY HOLDING A silent-a-thon
| silent-a-thon is a fundraising program run by IWDA in secondary schools in support of the young refugee women on the Thai – Burma border.silent-a-thon involves you and your schoolmates getting sponsorship to remain silent for a whole day, afternoon or even a lunch break.A few hours of silence are a small sacrifice to make – in return you will get an idea of what living without freedom of speech would be like; as some women endure their whole lives, simply for being female.Funds raised though the silent-a-thon will go towards supporting the Karen Young Women’s Leadership School and SWAN Internship on the Thai-Burma border. If funds raised exceed the needs of these two projects, they will be channelled into other IWDA projects, which support women and their communities in the Asia-Pacific region. |  |
