Sexual Health Improvement

East New Britain Sexual Health Improvement Project

Issue: To reduce the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and increasing HIV rates sexual health services need to be supported by community engagement and action.

Partners: Burnet Institute, Melbourne and Cairns Sexual Health Services

Outline: The overall aim of this project is to reduce the rate of HIV prevalence in East New Britain province through the use of integrated sexual health services supplemented by a gendered community engagement component. IWDA is supporting a gender sensitive community based response which aims to empower women and men to make positive and informed sexual and reproductive health decisions.

Funding source: AusAID through PNG/Australian NGO Cooperative Agreement

Status of project: This project is in its first year and has seen the commencement of the community engagement activities in the first district. IWDA has supported the Burnet Institute in the development of training workshops for community educators – both women and men.
