Women mobilising for democracy

Thai Burma border

Partners: Women’s League of Burma

Funding source: Planet Wheeler Foundation

Issue: There is a vacuum of relevant political and human rights information available for women from Burma and few opportunities to engage in action to advocate for change for women.

Outline: This initiative facilitates women’s ability to be informed and active citizens in fragile settings, using a peer education approach to support the participation of women in civil and political discourse. Monthly interactive forums focus on topics such as human rights, participatory governance, constitutional arrangements and gender analysis and women have the opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and awareness to actively participate in discussions and activities related to the pro-democracy movement.

Impact: Thirteen member organisations of the Women’s League of Burma conducted monthly forums in Burma, China, India, Bangladesh and on the Thai Burma border, each attended by 15–30 participants. It provided access to vital information, raising awareness and mobilising women to exercise their civil and political rights within the pro-democracy movement in Burma.
