Country: Cambodia

Partners: Banteay Srei, Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC)

Funding source: AusAID Cambodia Cooperation Agreement

Issue: Gender-based violence, including domestic violence and trafficking are widespread in Cambodia. Laws against violence are not always implemented and levels of acceptance and impunity are high.

Outline: Working in 40 villages, the project utilises a variety of empowerment strategies, and works with local groups, to give men and women opportunities to change attitudes and behaviours related to violence against women. The project aims to empower individuals and communities to identify and realise their own solutions to reduce gender based violence, and works with local authorities to ensure responses to domestic violence are non-discriminatory.

Impact: Activities were completed in December 2009 and the evaluation demonstrated that the project has made a positive and lasting impact in reducing violence against women. In each village, attitudes and behaviours have changed and communities have reduced their level of acceptance of violence by 20%. Also, 50% of women and men involved in the project also indicated that they now know how to solve problems in the family without violence.
