Freedom from Family & Sexual Violence

Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Partner: Eastern Highlands Family Voice (EHFV)

Funding source: IWDA supporters and AusAID – ANCP

Issue: Law and order, conflicts over development and who will benefit and profound gender inequalities contribute to extreme levels of violence against women and substantial family breakdown.

Outline: This project supports rural communities in Eastern Highlands Province to address violence against women through non-violent conflict resolution approaches. EHFV provides counselling, referral services and community education about family violence and child rights. EHFV is supported to train, support and monitor community-appointed volunteers to promote community peace-building throughout the province.

Impact: With IWDA’s support this year, EHFV reviewed their volunteer program to extend the impact of project work. Capacity development sessions have increased staff confidence and skills in responding to local circumstances, collecting evidence to support the counselling services and contributing to the organisation’s advocacy and policy work. Communities were involved in training sessions, seeking to empower individuals to take action or alter behavioural patterns in relation to family conflict. The training addressed human rights, gender and violence and the link between gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS.
