Issue: While it is widely recognised that women are often among the primary victims of conflict, their role in conflict prevention and post-conflict reconciliation is often ignored or sidelined. Recent post-conflict events in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea have demonstrated that women are more likely to be the first to cross conflict lines, often ignoring personal risk to promote non-violence, peace and human rights.

Outline: The project is training regional Pacific women peace builders linked with advocacy, education and awareness-raising on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325: Women, Peace and Security. UNSCR 1325 identifies the importance of women’s participation in peace processes, among both civil society representatives and key policy makers.

Impact: The policy and advocacy handbook developed through this initiative was launched during the annual Pacific Forum Regional Security Committee meeting. This resource has become a valuable tool in supporting individuals and organisations to campaign effectively for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 in the Pacific region. It includes a companion DVD highlighting the voices of women from the community.
