Issue: Violence against women is prevalent in Cambodia where 20–25% of married women experience intimate partner violence. The Banteay Srei Safe House is the only emergency accommodation for women and girls in Battambang province.
Outline: The Safe House serves as a vital centre for women experiencing gender-based violence, offering emergency accommodation and food, transportation, referrals for medical, legal and psychosocial services, orientation on basic rights, basic health education, as well as assistance in filing legal complaints, and accessing longer-term rehabilitation and reintegration services.
Impact: This year the Safe House hosted 233 survivors of rape (of which 162 were repeat cases), 46 survivors of domestic violence (24 repeat cases) and one survivor of trafficking. A total of 339 witnesses (family members including small children) stayed with the clients at the Safe House. Women received health examinations and individual counselling, participated in small group workshops, and were supported to file legal complaints. Some 259 cases were monitored by female Commune Councillors once the women returned to their village.
