Speak up for gender justice and climate change

Fiji

Partner: Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM)

Funding source: IWDA supporters and AusAID – ANCP

Issue: Women in Fiji and the Pacific are already experiencing the impacts of climate change on their daily lives. It is important that girls learn about the science and implications of climate change, to be able to participate in community planning that safeguards their livelihoods and contributes to environmental sustainability.

Outline: The FWRM’s Young Women’s Climate Justice Programme aims to enable girls aged 10–12 years (the ‘Green Girls’) to learn about and share information on climate change by accessing media and technology. Young women (18–25 years old) involved in the FWRM’s Emerging Leaders Forum worked with the Green Girls in a two-day video recording and scripting skills workshop, which culminated in the Green Girls producing three short (one to two minute) DVDs on Gender Justice and Climate Change. The Green Girls also set up a nursery and helped to nurture 100 tree seedlings before planting them at an International Women’s Day event in Suva.

Impact: FWRM has created a unique and important platform in Fiji for girls and young women to learn and share information on climate change.
